Match Preview | St. Louis CITY SC Travels to Face Colorado Rapids in U.S. Open Cup Semifinals on Wednesday

Following a 4-2 win over Minnesota United, St. Louis CITY SC shifts its focus to the U.S. Open Cup Semifinals, traveling to face the Colorado Rapids at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park on Wednesday, September 16. The match will kick off at 8:30 p.m. CT and will be available on CBS Sports Network and Paramount+. The winner will advance to the U.S. Open Cup Final on Wednesday, October 21.

Last Time Out 

St. Louis CITY SC earned a 4-2 victory over Minnesota United FC at Energizer Park on Saturday night, extending its unbeaten streak to 16 matches across all competitions. After falling behind in the fifth minute, CITY SC responded with four goals, including goals from Daniel Edelman, Carlo Holse and a brace from Rafael Navarro. Navarro’s second goal came from the penalty spot in the 57th minute, marking his second consecutive brace and giving him 14 goals in MLS this season.  

How We Got Here 

St. Louis CITY SC advanced to the U.S. Open Cup Semifinal for the first time in club history after defeating Houston Dynamo FC on penalty kicks in the Quarterfinal at Energizer Park. CITY SC opened its tournament run with a 4-0 victory over FC Tulsa in the Round of 32 before earning a 2-1 comeback win over Chicago Fire FC on the road in the Round of 16. In the Quarterfinal, St. Louis and Houston played to a 2-2 draw after 120 minutes before CITY SC upended the Dynamo 4-2 in a penalty shootout.  

St. Louis CITY SC vs. Colorado Rapids 

Wednesday’s match will be the ninth meeting between St. Louis CITY SC and the Colorado Rapids across all competitions, with CITY SC holding a 3-3-2 all-time record. The U.S. Open Cup Semifinal will mark the first time they have faced each other in the competition. The two sides have met twice this season, with CITY SC earning 1-0 victories in both matchups, including a 1-0 win at Energizer Park in July. Tomáš Ostrák scored the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute of the most recent meeting. In the match at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park, Sangbin scored the winner off an assists from Roman Bürki and Simon Becher.  

Scouting Colorado Rapids 

Colorado Rapids sit seventh in the Western Conference with 35 points and an 11-12-2 record. The Rapids are coming off a 1-0 victory over CF Montréal on Saturday, with Paxten Aaronson scoring the game-winning penalty. Aaronson leads Colorado with six goals and six assists in MLS this season, while the Rapids have scored 33 goals and conceded 32. Colorado has been strong at home, recently winning six straight at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park and posting six consecutive clean sheets in that stretch.
