Fresh off a bye week, St Louis CITY2 is back in action in MLS NEXT Pro to face Portland Timbers2. CITY2 have played all their home games at St. Louis University’s Hermann Stadium but will be traveling across the river to Ralph Korte Stadium at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville for the match this Sunday, May 22, kicking off at 7:00 p.m. CST.
In their last game, CITY2 fell after conceding two late goals against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2, even though they created the better chances and outshot their opponents 18-7. The team dominated the match from the first whistle and took the lead in the 18th minute after Josh Dolling headed in a cross from Kwame Awuah. Following the goal, CITY2 controlled the game but just couldn’t capitalize on the chances they created which provided Whitecaps FC 2 with the confidence they needed to launch their comeback. The team has had two full weeks to prepare and will be looking to get back to winning ways against a misfiring Timbers2 team.
Timbers2 are still searching for their first win of the MLS NEXT Pro season, currently sitting 10th place in the Western Conference standings with a record of 0-5-2. Their two draws came against Real Monarchs, who CITY2 upended 2-0, and Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2, the team responsible for CITY2’s last defeat. STL CITY2 will be eager to hand Timbers2 another defeat as they look to move up in the standings.
CITY2 forward Josh Dolling has scored three goals and registered two assists so far this season – averaging a goal contribution per match, which means he has been directly involved in half of the team’s 10 goals this season. With both teams looking to get back on track, fans should expect a thrilling, attacking game from both sides.
