First Match, First Win
Last week, St. Louis CITY SC announced the departure of former head coach Olof Mellberg, with CITY2 head coach David Critchley stepping in to take over first team duties. In his debut match, Critchley led CITY SC to a 2-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes. The win marked Critchley’s first as an MLS head coach and came against the league’s all-time winningest manager, Bruce Arena. Goals from Klauss and Eduard Löwen highlighted a strong showing of two CITY SC original attacking threats. The result also ended CITY SC’s 11-match regular-season winless streak.
CITY SC No. 10: Eduard Löwen
Eduard Löwen’s match-winning penalty in the 90’+2 minute against San Jose on Saturday was the latest game-winner in St. Louis CITY SC’s regular season history. Prior to that, the club had never scored a winning goal later than the 86th minute. Löwen continues to shine at home, where he’s tallied 24 goal contributions (10 goals, 14 assists) in just 30 regular season matches, playing a major role in CITY SC’s strong home form. Overall, he has registered 13 goals and 19 assists in 59 regular season appearances. Since 2023, CITY SC holds an impressive 20-3-3 record in matches where Löwen records a goal or assist.
St. Louis CITY SC vs Portland Timbers
St. Louis CITY SC has avoided defeat in both of its visits to Portland, earning a 2-1 win in March 2023 and playing to an exciting 4-4 draw at Providence Park last season. Overall, CITY SC has lost just once in five all-competition meetings with the Timbers, holding a 2-1-2 record. In their most recent visit to Portland, several CITY SC players hit key milestones: Simon Becher scored his first MLS goal for the club, while Henry Kessler and Jannes Horn made their CITY SC debuts. Marcel Hartel delivered three assists in his MLS debut against the Timbers, becoming just the second player in league history to register three assists in a regular season debut.
Scouting Portland Timbers
Portland enters the weekend unbeaten in seven straight home matches at Providence Park (4-0-3 record) after opening the season with a loss to Vancouver. That defeat to the Whitecaps is one of just two home losses for the Timbers in their last 20 regular season matches at Providence Park (12-2-6 record). In May, Portland managed two wins, against Sporting Kansas City and, most recently, a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids last weekend. Offensively, the Timbers have three players with five goals each: Felipe Mora, Antony, and Kevin Kelsy. Their number ten, David Da Costa, currently leads MLS with eight assists.
