CITY2 extended their unbeaten streak to nine games, defeating Ventura County FC 4-2 in the penalty shootout on Wednesday, July 16. VCFC scored early in the first half, but Matteo Kidd found the back of the net in the 57th minute to tie it 1-1. The goal was Kidd’s fifth of the season. In the penalty shootout following regulation, Christian Olivares made two crucial saves while Cam Cilley scored the winning penalty to give CITY2 the extra two points.

A win on Sunday would mark the first time in team history that CITY2 has gone undefeated in back-to-back months. Across this nine-game stretch, CITY2 has picked up 26 out of a possible 27 points, surging them into first place in MLS NEXT Pro.

St Louis’ last win against Minnesota United FC 2 started their historical eight match win streak. CITY2 defeated MNUFC2, 3-2 on May 18 at National Sports Center Stadium. Mykhi Joyner scored a brace, and Miguel Perez bagged the game-winner with five minutes left in regulation.

Minnesota enters Sunday’s matchup after playing in a midweek game against The Town FC, falling 3-2 on the road. MNUFC2 sits in tenth place in MLS NEXT Pro Western Conference standings with a 7-7-3 record posting 24 points. 12 different players have contributed to the team’s 28 goals this season, with forward Luke Hille at the top with seven goals and midfielder Curt Calov with six assists.
