Coming off a 1-1 draw away to Colorado Rapids last Saturday, St. Louis CITY SC will commence its U.S. Open Cup campaign in the third round against Union Omaha this Tuesday, April 25. Kickoff is set for 7:00PM CT, and the match will be televised on the Bleacher Report App and the Bleacher Report Football YouTube. The match will be broadcasted by our radio partners on KYKY Y98.1 FM (English) and KXOK 102.9 FM (Spanish).

The connection between St. Louis and the U.S. Open Cup began more than a century ago and is bound by 10 championship titles. Ben Millers became the first St. Louis-based team to win the tournament in 1920 after defeating Fore River Rovers of Quincy, Massachusetts. Various St. Louis sides have gone on to win the cup since Ben Millers’ inaugural achievement including, St. Louis Scullins Steel (1922), St. Louis Stix, Baer & Fuller F.C. (1933, 1943), St. Louis Central Breweries (1935), St. Louis Simpkins-Ford (1948, 1950), St. Louis Kutis SC (1957, 1986) and St. Louis Busch Seniors (1988).

St Louis CITY2 built upon that legacy in the 2022 season after defeating Indy Eleven in the second round of the tournament and falling in penalty shootouts against Louisville City in the third round. CITY2 was eligible since the club’s first team did not start until the 2023 season.

In their last match, St. Louis CITY SC earned a point against Colorado on the back of great team goal that was finished off by midfielder Rasmus Alm and a spectacular performance by goalkeeper Roman Bürki who produced a league-best 12 saves in the match. CITY SC sits at the summit of the MLS Western Conference standings with 19 points following their historic start to the season (6-2-1 record).

Union Omaha currently sits in seventh place in the USL League One standings. Omaha owns a record of 1-2-1, averaging a goal a game so far this season. While the club is still searching for their first home win in league play, they have played their best on the road, earning a win and tie in their two away games to start their season.

Omaha had a historic U.S. Open Cup run just a season ago, taking down the Des Moines Menace, Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC and a pair of Major League Soccer opponents in Chicago Fire and Minnesota United FC, in route to their quarterfinal's appearance against Sporting KC.  Union Omaha made history when they defeated Minnesota United, becoming the first Nebraskan side to ever reach the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals in the 107-year history of the tournament and the first Division 3 pro squad since 2013.
