John Hackworth - Assistant Coach/Director of Coaching

JOHN HACKWORTH

Hackworth led St Louis CITY2 to the MLS NEXT Pro Championship in its inaugural season in 2022. He returns to Major League Soccer as one of Carnell’s assistants with over four years of MLS experience, two years as head coach and GM and two-and-a-half as an assistant with the Philadelphia Union (2010-2014).  

Overall, he has accumulated over 30 years of experience at various levels of the U.S. soccer landscape. In his role as director of coaching, Hackworth will continue to support sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel in implementing and managing the team’s coaching development programs, working closely with the coaches to ensure that the club’s sporting philosophy is consistent at all levels.   

Prior to joining St. Louis CITY SC, Hackworth served as the head coach and sporting director of Louisville City FC, winning the USL Championship title in 2018 and guiding the team back to the finals a year later. Hackworth was the Head Coach for the U.S. U-17 Men’s National Team on two different occasions, leading the team to three U17 World Cups while advancing out of the group stages in all three and reaching the quarterfinals in 2005 and 2017.
