Andreas Schumacher joins St. Louis CITY SC as the U17 Academy Head Coach. Schumacher specializes in player development and will aim to achieve the highest level of success by creating a strong team culture and providing a life enriching experience for the players on and off the field. In his most recent role as assistant coach at Vfb Stuttgart, Schumacher guided the club’s individual player training programs, producing talented professional players.

Schumacher brings over 20 years of experience with him as a player and coach within Bundesliga and Bayernliga German leagues. His professional playing career began with the Stuttgart Kickers U19 Bundesliga team, which eventually led to his coaching career with SpVgg Weiden. In 2017, Schumacher graduated from H:G University of Health and Sports Berlin with a Master’s in Sports Science.

David Critchley is a St. Louis CITY SC Academy Assistant Coach, one of three assistant coaches that will work within St. Louis CITY SC’s Academy. Critchley will support Academy Head Coach Andreas Schumacher in overseeing the development of St. Louis CITY’s sporting philosophy, guiding players and working with the other coaches to ensure the continuity of player development from the youth level to the senior team.

Critchley started his career as a collegiate coach at Oklahoma Wesleyan University in 2012, where he helped to develop training and exercise programs. In 2015, Critchley graduated from Oklahoma Wesleyan University with a Master’s in Marketing. Most recently he was the technical director of Lou Fusz Athletic, where he led the organization’s technical operations by creating innovative solutions for sporting and administrative challenges.

Local soccer star, Elvir Kafedžić is announced as one of St. Louis CITY SC’s assistant coaches for the academy teams, after first joining the team in fall 2020 as a sporting consultant. His new role involves supporting Academy Head Coach Andreas Schumacher in creating a competitive environment where players can grow on and off the field.  Kafedžić will represent the club in building meaningful relationships with the larger soccer community, especially within St. Louis’ Bosnian community, and actively engage in the club’s youth scouting to find and coach the best possible talents.

Kafedžić played soccer for various teams throughout his professional playing career, including the St. Louis Strikers, St. Louis Steamers, Chicago Storm and the California Cougars. He also represented the U.S. on an international level, playing for the U.S. National Futsal team. In 2013, Kafedžić established the Saint Louis Dragons, a local youth soccer club, where he began coaching to get more involved and share his knowledge of the game with the youth in the St. Louis community.

Luis Swisher is one of St. Louis CITY SC’s academy assistant coaches. With strong ties to the St. Louis youth soccer landscape, Swisher adds an important layer of player identification and talent development within the academy. Additionally, Swisher will be responsible for supporting the sporting director and the academy’s head coach in creating St. Louis CITY’s development training programs where players can grow on and off the field.

In 2012, Swisher graduated from ESI School of Management, located in Guatemala, with a Master’s in Business Administration. Swisher’s professional playing career began with the Aurora Futbol Club in Guatemala, which eventually led to stints with various clubs in Europe. In 2013, he began his coaching career in Guatemala at the University of San Carlos leading to other coaching experiences in the U.S. with various academy teams, most recently at Saint Louis FC as head coach.

ACADEMY GOALKEEPER COACH

Highly respected local coach Tim Kelly is named as St. Louis CITY SC academy’s goalkeeper coach. Kelly has years of experience as both a player and coach and will be responsible for implementing training programs geared towards developing goalkeepers within St. Louis CITY’s academy. Additionally, Kelly will produce individual progress reviews and development plans for academy goalkeepers, improving players in all aspects of the game.

Kelly played professionally for the Kansas City Wizards in 1997 and the Arizona Sahuaros in 1998. Over the past few years, Kelly has worked with various local organizations, including Saint Louis University, Lindenwood University and St. Louis Athletic Center. His most recent role as director of goalkeeping for St. Louis Scott Gallagher Soccer Club allowed him to train and develop some of St. Louis’ top goalkeepers.

CHARLES RENKEN

Charles Renken works within the St. Louis CITY SC Academy as a specialist coach, after previously joining the club as a sporting consultant in fall 2020. Within his role, Renken will provide individual training for players in various positions, improving their technique and positional awareness. Additionally, he will assist the club by developing scouting networks and building relationships within the local soccer community.

Renken played professional soccer for nine years, both in the U.S. and internationally. Throughout his national professional playing career, Renken played for Portland Timbers, Arizona United, Saint Louis FC and Seattle Sounders. Over the past five years, Renken has worked as a coach with various local soccer programs including Washington University, Club Atletico and St. Louis Scott Gallagher.

St. Louis CITY Academy continues MLS NEXT season away to Indiana Fire Academy on Saturday, September 18 at Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield, Indiana. Fresh off their emphatic 11-0 victory against Midwest United FC, the U16 team will look to add another win when they kick off at 1:15 p.m. CST, while the U17 team will look to bounce back from their first loss at 11:00 a.m. CST.
